Searching for Mail in Netscape 4.0x

Sometimes you need to find a particular piece of information in your e-mail. Maybe you weren't very good at filing your mail, or perhaps you can't remember who sent it to you. Communicator has a built in Search feature that should make it easy for you to find that mail.

First, open Netscape and change to Messenger. Under the Edit menu, choose Search Messages. This will open the "Search Messages" dialog box.

  • Under Search for items in: pick the folder where you think the message is. If you can't remember which subfolder it is in, narrow it down as far as possible. If you can't narrow it down at all, set the folder to bama.ua.edu.
  • In the first of the three drop down boxes in a row, pick which field of the message you want to search, such as subject, sender, or body.
  • In the second box, choose your search criteria: contains or doesn't contain.
  • In the third box, type your key word or phrase
  • If you need more criteria, press the More button and fill in the additional lines. This will do an "and" search on all the criteria
  • When you are done, press the Search button.

If you have set it to search any folders that contain folders instead of messages, you will get two IMAP errors for each one. This is normal; you can click OK and ignore them.

The results of your search will be displayed below it. To view a message from the list, simply double-click it.
