Creating a Signature in Netscape 4.5-4.7

A "signature" on e-mail is something that the mail program puts at the end of every letter you send. It usually consists of your name and some contact information, although some people also use pictures made of text characters and/or quotations. Remember that your signature will probably go out on everything you write, so short is best.

First you have to create the signature file. This is just a text file that contains the signature. Use a text editor such as Notepad or Simple Text; if you use a word processor like Word, you must be sure to save it as text! Make sure that you save your file somewhere that makes sense to you; either inside one of the Netscape directories or in My Documents would probably be best. You should also give it a simple name such as signature.txt.

Once you have created the file, you must then tell Netscape where to find it:

  1. Open Netscape.
  2. Choose Preferences under the Edit menu.
  3. Expand the Mail & Newsgroups option and choose Identity.
  4. The bottom blank is labeled "Signature File". Click on Choose... and browse for the file you created.
  5. Click OK when you are done.

Now when you send mail, you will see your signature at the bottom. You can edit this any time you send a message, but you will usually leave it alone.
