Reading Mail with Outlook Express

Open Outlook Express. The display shows an index of your mail folders on the left and a list of messages in the current folder on the right. There is a third window across the bottom that displays the current message.

By default, the folder called Inbox should be highlighted as the current folder when you open Outlook. This folder is where all of your new mail is put. All of your other folders are listed below it, and they can be selected by clicking on them.

In the window on the right, messages are displayed in index form, which shows the subject line, the sender, and the date sent of each message. Messages in bold text are unread.

To display a message in the bottom window, click the message's line in the index to select it. If you want to display a message in a separate window, double-click its index line.

Once a message is displayed, you can use the buttons on the toolbar to perform different actions on the message. Some of the most common are as follows:

  • Reply to author: opens the new message dialog to send mail to the person who sent the message to you.
  • Reply to all: opens the new message dialog to send mail to the person who sent the message to you and to everyone else who received it.
  • Forward: opens the new message dialog to send this message to additional people.
  • Delete: deletes the current message.
