Sending Mail with Outlook Express
Open Outlook. To send a new mail message, press the Compose Message button. This opens the "New Message" window, which is the same window that opens when you reply to or forward a mail message you are reading. You can choose Outlook stationery to use if you click the small arrow next to the Compose Message button, but your recipient must be able to view HTML mail to see it.
Your cursor is on the blank line at the top labeled "To:". In that field, type the e-mail address of the person you are sending to. If you want to send to multiple people, separate the addresses with semicolons or commas.
If you would like to use other fields in the header, such as Cc: (Carbon copy) or Bcc: (Blind carbon copy), simply fill in the respective lines.
In the "Subject:" field, type the subject of the e-mail, which is similar to the subject line in a memo. A good subject is short and descriptive, allowing your recipient to determine the importance and contents of the letter from the new mail index. While a subject is not required, the lack of a subject could cause your letter to be read late or not at all!
Under the Formatting menu, you may want to check whether you are sending HTML or plain text mail. Keep in mind that HTML mail allows more formatting options, but that some people cannot read it.
Type the contents of your letter in the large white box below the subject. When you are done, you may want to do the following:
- Attach a file: use the button on the toolbar that looks like a paper clip.
- Check your spelling: choose Spelling from the Tools menu or press the F7 key.
- Save a copy of the letter to a file: choose Save from the File menu.
When you are done, press the Send button. Once you send an e-mail, you cannot retrieve it, so be sure that you are completely finished.
