Using Other Mail Clients with Bama E-mail
If you use your own computer, or share one with only a few people, you will probably want to use a mail client such as Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Outlook. These programs require you to set up certain options on your computer, so you need to have access to a computer on which you can do this.
There are two major methods used to read mail: POP3 and IMAP. You may use either of the two with your Bama account, but we strongly recommend IMAP, especially if you plan on using the myBama Web site to check your mail when away from home. (More information about the differences between IMAP and POP3 is available.)
Basic setup instructions
Use the following information to set up your client to receive and send mail:
- IMAP (incoming) server: bama.ua.edu
- IMAP folder prefix: mail/
- Account name/password: Exactly the same as you use on the myBama Web site
- SMTP (outgoing) server: smtp.ua.edu if you are on the campus network. If you are using another ISP, use their SMTP server
If you would like to have your client search the campus e-mail directory, also use the following:
- LDAP (directory) server: ldap.ua.edu
- Search root: ou=people,dc=ua,dc=edu
