Configuring Mail Clients for SpamAssassin

The following instructions are designed for those who are forwarding their e-mail off of bama.ua.edu but still want to take advantage of the SpamAssassin filter. These instructions will allow you to put all spam messages in a separate folder from your normal e-mail.

Outlook

  1. Go to the Tools menu and choose Rules and Alerts.
  2. In the Rules and Alerts dialog box under "Apply changes to this folder," select the inbox for the account you want to create the rule for and click New Rule .
  3. Under Start from a blank rule, select Check messages when they arrive. Click Next.
  4. Under "Which condition(s) do you want to check?" Step 1: Select conditions, select With specific words in the message header.
  5. Under Step 2, "Edit the rule description (click an underlined value):" click on the underlined part of the description, specific words. This opens the Search Text dialog box.
  6. Under "Specify a word or phrase to search for in the message header," type:
    X-Spam-Flag: YES
    Click Add, and then click OK. Click Next to go to the next step.
  7. Under "What do you want to do with the message," Step 1: Select action(s), check Move it to the specified folder.
  8. Under Step 2, "Edit the rule description (click an underlined value):", click on the underlined specified to set the folder. Choose a folder such as Junk or create a new one. Click OK.
  9. Go to the next step. Add any exceptions if needed. Go to the next step.
  10. Under "Specify a name for this rule," keep the suggested name or replace it with something else. Make sure Turn on this rule is checked.
  11. Click Finish and then click OK.
