Dialup Instructions for Windows 95/98

For best results when installing any software, close all running programs before beginning.

Check Your Modem

  1. Check to see that your modem is properly installed.
    1. Right-click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and choose Properties from the drop-down menu.
    2. Click the Device Manager tab.
    3. Make sure the bullet is on "View Devices by Type".
    4. Locate the "Modem" device on the list of installed devices, then click the plus sign to its left to expand the list of installed modems. If a modem is not present, you must have one installed before continuing.
    5. Click the name of your modem to highlight it, then click the Properties button.
    6. Check the "General" tab's "Device status" box. If your modem is properly installed, it should say "This device is working properly". Do not proceed until your modem is working properly.
    7. Click the Modem tab and uncheck the box "Only connect at this speed."
    8. Click the OK button to exit Modem Properties.
    9. Click OK to close the System Properties window.
  2. Check to see that your phone line is properly connected to the wall connection and to the line connection on your modem.

Check Your Dial-Up Networking Installation

  1. Double-click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop
  2. If there is a "Dial-Up Networking" folder present, skip down to "III. Add Network Components". If not:
    1. Close all running programs.
    2. Click the Start button, then Settings, then Control Panel.
    3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    4. Click the Windows Setup tab.
    5. Click Communications in the list of installed components to highlight it.
    6. Click the Details button to open the "Details" dialog window.
    7. Check "Dial-Up Networking", then click OK.
    8. Click the OK button to install Dial-Up Networking. You may be prompted to insert your Windows CD.
    9. Restart your computer.

Add Network Components

  1. Click the Start button, then Settings, then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Network icon.
  3. If "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP" are not installed:
    1. Click Add...
    2. Select "Adapter" from the list and click Add.
    3. Select "Microsoft" on the "Manufacturers" list, and select "Dial-Up Adapter" on the "Network Adapters" list. Click OK.
    4. Click Add...
    5. Select "Protocol" from the list and click Add.
    6. Select "Microsoft" on the "Manufacturers" list, and select "TCP/IP" on the "Network Protocols" list. Click OK.
  4. Click OK to close the Network control panel. If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.

Create a New UA Dialup Connection Icon

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the Desktop.
  2. Open the Dial-Up Networking folder.
  3. Double-click the Make New Connection icon.
  4. When prompted to "type a name for the computer you are dialing", enter "UA Dialup", then click Next.
  5. The telephone number is (205)347-1800 (7-1800 from on campus).
  6. Click Finish to complete the icon setup.

Check the Connection Properties

  1. Right-click on your new UA Dialup icon in the "Dial-Up Networking" folder, then click Properties.
  2. On the General tab, make sure that "Use country code and area code" is only checked if you are calling long distance.
  3. On the Server Types tab, check the following settings:
    • Type of Dial-Up Server: "PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet" or "PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98" (in pull-down list)
    • Advanced options: "Enable software compression" should be the only one checked.
    • Allowed network protocols: "TCP/IP" should be the only one checked.
  4. Click the TCP/IP Settings button and verify the following settings, then click OK.
    • "Server assigned IP address" and "Server assigned name server addresses" should both be selected.
    • "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote system" should both be checked.
  5. If you have a Scripting tab, make sure that no script file is listed and no box is checked on that tab.
  6. Click OK to exit the Properties dialog window.

Connect to UA Dialup

  1. Double-click on your UA Dialup connection icon (in the "Dial-Up Networking" folder).
  2. Enter the same user name and password that you use on the myBama Web site.
  3. Click the Connect button.

NOTE: If errors occur, write down the error number and text and call the HelpDesk at 348-HELP.

Optional Steps

Create a Shortcut on your Desktop

  1. Right-click on your UA Dialup icon (in the "Dial-Up Networking" folder), then click Create Shortcut.
  2. A "Shortcut" error window will open with the message "Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?" Click the Yes button.

Setting Multiple Attempts for Connection Failures

  1. Open your Dial-Up Networking folder.
  2. From the Connections menu, click on Settings...
  3. On the General tab, check the "Redial" check box.
  4. Set "Before giving up retry" to 12 tries.
  5. Set "Between tries wait:" to 0 minutes, 30 seconds.
  6. Click OK to close the window.
  7. Close the Dial-Up Networking window.
