Dialup Instructions for Windows NT 4

For best results when installing any software, close all running programs before beginning. Also, make sure you are logged on as Administrator.

Check Your Modem

  1. Check to see that your modem is properly installed:
    1. Double-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop.
    2. Double-click on the Control Panel icon.
    3. Double-click on the Modems icon.
    4. If your modem is listed, click the Close button. If it is not, click the Add... button and install it.
  2. Make sure that your phone line is properly connected to the wall connection and to the line connection on your modem.

Check Dial-Up Networking Installation

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. If there is no "Dial-Up Networking" folder present:
    1. Close all running programs.
    2. Double-click on the Control Panel icon in My Computer.
    3. Double-click on the Network icon.
    4. Click the Add button.
    5. Select the "Remote Access Service" listing and click OK.
    6. Click OK to acknowledge the location of the NT setup files.
    7. Click Continue, then OK.
    8. When prompted, restart the computer.

Add Network Components

  1. Click the Start button, then Settings, then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Network icon.
  3. On the Protocols tab, if TCP/IP is installed, click Cancel. If it is not:
    1. Click Add...
    2. Select "TCP/IP Protocol" and click OK.
    3. Click Continue to acknowledge the setup files.
    4. Click Yes when asked if you want to use TCP/IP with Remote Access Service.
    5. When prompted, restart the computer.

Create a New UA Dialup Connection

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. Double-click Dial-up Networking.
  3. If this is your first connection, a message appears saying that the phone book is empty; click OK. Otherwise, the phonebook appears and you should click New.
  4. Enter "UA Dialup" as the name for the connection. Click Next.
  5. Check the boxes for "I am calling the Internet" and "Send my plain text password if that's the only way to connect." Click Next. (If you get an error message saying that TCP/IP is not enabled for Remote Access Service, follow the onscreen instructions.)
  6. The telephone number is 347-1800 (7-1800 for on campus residents). Uncheck "Use Telephony Dialing Properties" unless you will be calling long distance. Click Next.
  7. Click Finish.

Check the Properties of Your New Connection

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. Double-click Dial-up Networking.
  3. Select UA Dialup in the "Phonebook entry to dial:" box. Click More and select "Edit entry and modem properties...".
  4. On the Server tab:
    • For "Dial-up Server Type", select "PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet".
    • Click the checkboxes for "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", "Enable software compression", and "Enable PPP LCP extensions."
    • Click the TCP/IP Settings button.
    • Make sure that "Server assigned IP address" and "Server assigned name server addresses" are both bulleted.
    • Check "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote system".
    • Click OK.
  5. On the Script tab, make sure that "None" is selected.
  6. Click OK.

Connect to the UA Dialup Network

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. Double-click Dial-up Networking.
  3. Select "UA Dialup" in the "Phonebook entry to dial:" box.
  4. Click Dial.
  5. Enter the same username and password as you use on the myBama Web site. Ignore the domain box.
  6. Click OK.

NOTE: If errors occur, write down the error number and text and call the HelpDesk at 348-HELP.

Optional Steps

Create a Shortcut on Your Desktop

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. Double-click Dial-up Networking.
  3. Click the More button and select "Create shortcut to entry...".
  4. Click OK.

Set Redial Options for Connection Failures

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. Double-click Dial-up Networking.
  3. Click the More button and select "User Preferences...".
  4. On the Dialing tab:
    • Make sure that your location is checked under "Enable auto-dial by location".
    • Set "Number of redial attempts" to 12.
    • Set "Seconds between redial attempts" to 30 seconds.
  5. Click OK, then click Close.
