Dialup Instructions for Windows XP
For best results when installing any software, close all running programs before beginning. Also, make sure you are logged on as Administrator.
Creating a UA Dialup Connection
- Click the Start button, then Control Panel, then Network Connections. (If your Control Panel is in Category view, select Network and Internet Connections, then the Network Connections Control Panel icon.)
- Under "Network Tasks" on the left hand side of the window, click Create a New Connection.
- The "New Connection Wizard" box should appear. Click the Next button.
- Select the "Connect to the Internet" option and click the Next button.
- Select the "Set up my connection manually" option and click the Next button.
- Select the "Connect using a dial-up modem" option and click the Next button.
- For the ISP name, type in UA Dialup and click the Next button.
- Enter the telephone number, then click the Next button.
- If calling long-distance, enter 205-347-1800.
- If calling locally but from off campus, enter 347-1800.
- If calling from on campus, enter 7-1800.
- In the "New Connection Wizard" window:
- Enter your myBama user name and password for the account information.
- Make sure that the "Make this the default Internet connection" and "Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection" options are checked.
- The "Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer" option should not be checked; this connection is for use by the Bama account holder only.

- Click the Next button.
- Check the option to add a shortcut to your desktop; click the Finish button. A "UA Dialup" icon should now appear on the desktop. To connect to the Internet, double-click the desktop icon; enter your account name and password if prompted.
Setting Redial Options (Optional)
- Click the Start button, then Control Panel, then Network Connections. (If your Control Panel is in Category view, select Network and Internet Connections, then the Network Connections Control Panel icon.)
Right-click on the UA Dialup icon
and select Properties from
the drop-down menu.- Click on the Options tab at the top of the "UA Dialup Properties" window.
- On the "Options" tab, set "Redial attempts" to 12 (or more) tries, "Time between redial attempts" to 5 seconds, and "Idle time before hanging up" to 1 minute.
- Make sure that the "Redial if line is dropped" option is checked.
- Click the OK button.
- Close the "Dial-up Networking" window.
Now your computer will automatically redial the UA Dialup number if you get a busy signal when attempting to connect.
If Your Connection Doesn’t Work
Follow the instructions below only if your connection doesn’t work.
Checking Your Modem in Windows XP
- Click the Start button, then Control Panel, then Phone and Modems. (If your Control Panel is in Category view, select Printers and Other Hardware, then the Phone and Modems Control Panel icon.)

- Is
your modem shown in the list box on the "Modems" tab?
- If it is, click the Cancel button.
- If it is not, click the Add... button, find your modem, and install it.
- Close the "Control Panel" window.
- Check to see that your phone line is properly connected to the wall connection and to your modem. Most modems have two jacks. To make sure you have used the correct jack on the modem, plug a phone into the other jack and check for a dial tone. If there is no dial tone, switch jacks and check again. If you still don’t get a dial tone, the phone jack you are using may need to be repaired.
Checking the Properties of Your UA Dialup Connection
- Click the Start button, then Control Panel, then Network Connections. (If your Control Panel is in Category view, select Network and Internet Connections, then the Network Connections Control Panel icon.)
- Right-click on the UA Dialup icon and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
- Click on the General tab if it is not already active.

- Check the telephone number to make sure it is correct.
- Click on the Networking tab.

- On the "Networking" tab, make sure that PPP: Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet is selected for "Type of Dial-up Server I am calling" and that "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" is checked.
- Click on the TCP/IP Properties button.
- Make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain a DNS Server address automatically" are both selected.
- Click the OK button to return to your "UA Dialup Properties" window.
- Click the OK button to exit the "UA Dialup Properties" window.
- Re-test your UA Dialup connection.
If errors continue to occur, write down the error number and text (if any), and then call the HelpDesk at 348-HELP.
