If You Have a Computer Virus

First, run your anti-virus software with the clean or disinfect option. You should get some indication that the virus was cleaned, not just detected. Then run another antivirus scan to make sure that the virus was cleaned.

If you believe your computer is infected and you don't have anti-virus software installed, you should not install any now. (You don't want your anti-virus software to become infected upon install!) Instead try a free on-line scanner like Trend Microsystem's Housecall.

If you are unable to get your computer cleaned and/or the virus has caused significant damage, you may need assistance from a computer support professional. If this is your work computer, contact your area's computer support team. (If you don't know who this is, contact the HelpDesk for assistance.) If this is your home computer, you will need to contract with an outside computer repair shop. Check the Yellow Pages or contact the HelpDesk for a list of Tuscaloosa-area companies.
