Software Licensing

Software Available at No Cost

The Software Download Library hosts local downloads of software for faculty, staff, and students, including telnet programs, FTP clients, and anti-virus software. Due to licensing restrictions, you must be using a computer that is connected to the University network to download from the library. To download licensed software from home, connect to the University network using a VPN connection.

While there are other free download sites on the Internet, please exercise caution when using them. Downloading software from unknown sources puts you at a major risk of contracting a computer virus . Also, you should be aware of copyright restrictions on shareware and demo programs, and also realize that some sites may be posting software illegally.

Special Licensing Programs

One of the services offered by the Office of Information Technology is the management of various software-licensing programs. These programs are available to departments, faculty, and staff.  The University does not offer a campus agreement for students at this time. Except for the McAfee virus scan software licensing agreement, none of our “regular” software agreements cover students.

  • The Microsoft Campus Agreement provides licenses for specific Microsoft products for participating departments. The agreement is renewed annually. Faculty and staff members in participating departments may get Microsoft Office systems desktop PC programs to use on personally-owned computers for work and personal use at a nominal cost through the Microsoft Home Use Program.
  • The Adobe Education Term Site License (TSL) is a volume licensing agreement that provides annual subscriptions to Adobe Acrobat Pro at a very low cost for participating departments. The agreement is renewed annually.
  • SPSS is free for installation on campus computers with home use rights for faculty/staff included. Our site license includes SPSS Base, Regresssion Models, and Advanced Models for both Windows and Macintosh. It also includes Tables for Windows only.
  • Minitab is free for installation on campus computers. There is no home use and departments should provide their own CD-R.
  • Maple is free for installation on campus computers with home use rights for faculty/staff included. Students are not covered under this license. Departments should provide their own CD-R.
  • The SAS System for Windows is licensed yearly. The first year costs $120, while renewals cost $110/yr thereafter. This license includes home use for faculty/staff. Also, each faculty license includes a license for one graduate assistant’s personal computer.
  • AutoCAD licenses currently cost $179/yr; this is liable to change depending on the number of licenses sold. There is no home use, and additional documentation is required.
  • OIT purchases SSL certificates in bulk from GeoTrust and resells them at cost. If you are in need of an SSL certificate, call our HelpDesk at 205-348-4357.

All software license charges must be paid by DTA. We cannot accept personal payments. For additional information about any of these programs, contact Cathy Rainey at 348-1634 or cathy.rainey@ua.edu.

Purchasing Software

Any software not available from the Software Download Library or a special licensing program must be purchased by the department or individual. For departments wanting to purchase Adobe software such as Dreamweaver, UA's purchasing department has a standing contract. Also, the University Supply Store carries academic versions of many popular software titles. You can contact the Supply Store's computer department at 348-0668.

Faculty, staff, and students are welcome to make personal purchases for Adobe products through our Adobe reseller at a discount (usually at about half of retail). Please visit the Web site at http://www.ciacentraledu.com/. When ordering from this Web site, you will need to register to place an order. After or before placing an order, e-mail or fax a copy of your campus ID to (301) 762-6719 or e-mail it to sales@ciacentral.com.
