Excel 2007 Ranges
Selecting Ranges
To select a range, you point to the center of the cell in one corner of the range, press and hold the mouse button while dragging to the opposite corner of the range, and release the mouse button. You can also select one corner of the range, press and hold the Shift key, and click on the opposite corner of the range to select all cells in between.
Another method, using only the keyboard, is to select one corner of the range, press and hold the Shift key, and press the arrow keys to highlight the range. To select a group of separate (nonadjacent) ranges that you want to affect at the same time, select the first range, press and hold the Ctrl key, and select the next range.
Copying/Moving Cell Contents
The Clipboard Group on the Home tab allows you to copy and paste cell contents. You can also drag and drop to move cell contents.
To move a cell or range of cells, point to the border of the selection. When the pointer becomes a move pointer
, drag the cell or range of cells to another location. To copy a cell or range of cells, hold down CTRL while you point to the border of the selection.
When the pointer becomes a copy pointer
, drag the cell or range of cells to another location.
Formatting Cells
The paintbrush icon
in the Clipboard group on the Home tab is the format painter used to copy the formatting and/or formulas of cells. Besides using the Format Painter to format a selected range of cells, you can use the dialog box launchers located in the corner of some groupings on the ribbon as shown below.
When you click on the downward pointing arrow on the corner of the Number group on the Home tab, it launches the Format Cells dialog box with the number tab selected as shown. Many groups on the Ribbon have such dialog box launchers. If you click on the dialog box launchers in the corner of the Font or Alignment groups, they too launch the Format Cells dialog box (but with different tabs selected).
In the Cells group on the Home tab, there is a dropdown menu indicated by the black triangle as shown:

By selecting Format Cells at the bottom of the menu, you can also open the Format Cells dialog box.
Right-click on selected cells to open a shortcut menu as shown:
To format the selected range of cells, choose Format Cells on the shortcut menu. Notice the floating formatting toolbar that appears in the new Excel 2007 once you open the shortcut menu.
