Practice: Inserting a Movie

  1. Download the file happy.mpg.  This is a movie of a worker unhappy with his computer.  You can use this file in your own presentation or find one of your own to insert.
  2. Create a slide such as the one shown below by inserting a new slide after slide 6—this slide can be about your own department in keeping with the rest of your presentation.  Type a title and some text relating to the movie.

  4. Click Insert on the menu bar, point to Movies and Sounds, and then click Movie from File.  The Insert Movie dialog box appears on the screen.

  6. Look in the folder where you downloaded and saved the file, click on the movie file, and then click the OK button. A message asks if you want your movie to play automatically in the slide show. If you click on Automatically, the movie will play as soon as that slide appears during the slide show.  If you answer When Clicked, the viewer or presenter will have to click the movie to play it.

  8. Click Automatically to indicate that you want the movie to play automatically. The first picture in the movie appears in the right side of the slide, and the text box decreases in size.

  10. Move the picture to the right-center of the slide by dragging it when the pointer changes to a Movie image.  Resize the text box so its right edge is near the left edge of the movie and its bottom edge fits the text as shown below.  Also, drag the text box down so that it is better aligned with the resized movie.

To view the movie, double-click it.
  12. Right-click the movie picture, click Edit Movie Object to display the Movie Options dialog box.

  14. Click the Loop until stopped check box, and then click the OK button.  Set the movie so that it loops continuously as long as Slide 7 is on the screen during the slide show.
  15. Movie image

To see how it works, click the Slide Show button Movie image to start the slide show from the current slide. The movie plays continuously until you press the spacebar or click the mouse button to move to the next slide.
  16. Press the Esc key twice in rapid succession to stop the movie and return to Normal View and then save the presentation. When you insert a movie into a slide, the movie file itself does not become part of the PowerPoint presentation. If you copy or move the presentation, you must copy or move the movie file with it. Then, before running the slide show, you should go to the slide with the movie, double click the movie picture, click the Yes button when PowerPoint asks you if you want to locate the movie, and then use the open Change Source dialog box to specify the new location of the movie file.
  17. Save your presentation and then go on to the next section on Inserting Slides from Another Presentation.
