Applying Special Effects

Special effects include such things as fading out of one slide as another appears, animated text, and sound effects which can make your presentation more interesting and emphasize key points.

Transitions

The first special effect to add is a transition effect, a method of moving one slide off the screen and bringing another slide onto the screen during a slide show.  Applying transitions is usually easier in Slide Sorter View because you can easily select several (or all) slides at once, but you can also apply a transition in the Slide Pane. You'll add a transition to all the slides in the presentation.

Practice: Adding a Transition Effect

  1. Switch to Slide Sorter View Slide sorter view icon.  (You can also add transitions when in Normal View by selecting the slides you want to add a transition to and on the Slide Show menu clicking Slide Transition).
  2. Special Effects image

  3. Click the Transition button on the Slide Sorter toolbar Special Effects image to display the Slide Transition Task Pane.
  4. Special Effects image

  5. Scroll down in the Apply to selected slides box of the Task Pane, and then click Newsflash.  Click the Apply to All Slides button at the bottom of the Task Pane. The transition is demonstrated. You can change the speed of the dissolve using the Modify transition section of the Slide Transition Task Pane.
  6. Click the Speed list arrow and click Medium.
  7. Click anywhere outside a slide to deselect the slides. A transition icon Transition icon image, a star, appears below the lower-left corner of each slide. You can test the transition of any slide by clicking on the transition icon.
  8. Click the transition icon below Slide 2.
  9. Click on the thumbnail of Slide 1 and click the Slide Show button at the bottom of the Task Pane to see how this transition looks, hitting the space bar, cursor, or arrow keys to proceed in the show.

Adding Sound Effects

Practice: Adding Sound Effects

  1. Click on Slide 3, the one with the organization chart.
  2. In the list, click the Checkerboard Down transition effect.
  3. Below Speed in the Modify transition section of the Task Pane, click on the Sound drop-down list arrow and choose Applause.
  4. Click on the Play button to see the transition and hear the sound effect applied.
  5. Notice that you can select options to “Loop until next sound” so that it continues to play.  Also, you have options on how you want to advance to the next slide, automatically or by clicking the mouse. Deselect "On mouse click" and leave it set to advance automatically after five seconds.
  6. Save the presentation and go on to the next section on Applying a Built-in Animation Scheme.
