Bama 101: Technical Information

  • Bama is a Sun V880 running Solaris 9. It has 6 UltraSPARC CPUs running at 900 MHz, and 12 GB of RAM. Programs can be coded to run multi-threaded on more than one CPU.
  • The version of Unix is System 5 Unix . If you don't know any Unix, you can buy a book at the Supe Store (or any local book store) and check out the Unix Tipsheet.
  • By default everyone is given a remote shell that will allow remote email use only. Users may choose to have a shell which allows FTP or an interactive shell, and can change to another shell using an online form. The most common interactive shell in use is the Korn shell (ksh), which is similar to but has more features than the Bourne shell (sh).
  • There is a great deal of software already installed and a list is available.
  • Many printers are connected around campus. To find what is available, type lpstat -p all -D. If you have a local networked printer that you want on the system contact the HelpDesk.
  • Computers capable of displaying X-Windows can use Openwindows, Common Desktop Environment (CDE), or twm. Openwindows is based on X11R6 and CDE is based on motif. Generic X11R6 is not available at this time.
  • To make a terminal connection to bama, use Secure Shell off your networked computer and connect to bama.ua.edu. Secure Shell should be available in labs but may need to be added. It can be downloaded for personal computers from the Software Download Library or picked up at the HelpDesk.
  • We use the procmail program to help distribute mail. Users who are familiar with this program can use a .procmailrc file in their home directory to control the delivery of mail. The most obvious use is to automatically sort email into different folders.
  • We use the Apache web server. Users can have their own Web pages, which should be stored in their "public_html" directories. Individual CGI scripts are also permitted after registering with the HelpDesk
