Signing on Using SSH/Telnet
There are some times when you may need to log directly onto bama.ua.edu; to use a particular piece of software, to manage your files and folders, or to check your e-mail using PINE. It is fairly easy to do.
Note that you must have an interactive shell in order to sign on to bama.ua.edu. More information is available.
- You must use a Secure Shell or telnet program. These are very common, and downloads and more information are available from the Software Download Library.
- Once you have started your SSH/telnet program, you must connect
to bama. This varies by program, but there will be a connection option
for
remote host; you should enter
bama.ua.edu - Once you have connected to bama, you will get a message and a login prompt. At this prompt, enter your account name on bama. This is the same account name you use on the myBama Web site.
- After you enter an account name, you will be prompted for your password. This is also the same password you use on myBama.
- Once you enter the correct account name and password, you will get a different login message and a dollar sign prompt ($). Once you get this prompt, you are ready to enter the command for your particular software program or other task.
- After you are finished using bama, always type
exitat the $ prompt to log off of your account.
